The guests were, mostly, Bredonborough people, and dressed up in finery for the event. A local trader, sitting next to me at the dining table, told me she had failed to recognise many of the people she sees everyday in town, such was the extent of the sumptuary code in effect. One non-recognised person, recognising the reason for her non-recognition, commented: I scrub up well. We were all well-scrubbed today.
